A man accused of fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend has been charged, California prosecutors say.

Gonzalo Garcia Rodriguez, 24, of Salinas, was charged with first-degree murder in relation to the death of Eugenio Lopez Ramirez, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office said in a March 13 news release.

Attorney information for Garcia Rodriguez was not immediately available.

Oxnard police got a report about a stabbing just before 10 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, the department said in a March 11 Facebook post.

When they arrived, police said they found Ramirez, 26, with multiple wounds to his torso.

Officers and first responders tried to save Ramirez before he was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries, according to police.

A GoFundMe says Ramirez “was the happiest person in the family and always lived his life to the fullest to make those around him happy.”

Following a weeks-long investigation, police identified Garcia Rodriguez, the “former boyfriend of Mr. Ramirez’s girlfriend,” as a suspect in Ramirez’s death and arrested him, the district attorney’s office said.

When he was arrested, Garcia Rodriguez was in custody on charges from a separate case, prosecutors said.

In addition to a murder charge, prosecutors said Garcia Rodriguez is facing “special allegations and aggravating circumstances, including use of a deadly weapon, causing great bodily injury, and that the victim was vulnerable.”

Garcia Rodriguez, who is being held without bail, pleaded not guilty at his arraignment and is scheduled to appear in court April 21, according to prosecutors.

Oxnard is about a 60-mile drive northwest from Los Angeles.
