Olaplex hair care sued over ‘Made in USA’ claims. Are you owed a refund?
Bought Olaplex products? You could be owed part of a class-action settlement.
The hair care brand, known for its “patented bond-building technology,” was the subject of an April 2024 lawsuit that accused the company of “deceptively” touting its products as “Made in USA.”
Olaplex has denied wrongdoing but agreed to pay no more than $1.35 million to settle the false advertising claims.
The brand labeled its hair treatment, shampoos and conditioners as “Made in USA,” despite containing “numerous foreign ingredients,” according to the complaint filed in California Superior Court in San Diego County.
“As a result, plaintiff and other similarly situated consumers overpaid for (Olaplex products) under the false belief that the product they purchased was made in the USA and did not contain key ingredients from outside the United States,” the lawsuit said.
McClatchy News reached out to Olaplex for comment March 26 but didn’t immediately hear back.
Under the settlement terms, eligible Olaplex buyers can receive a $5 voucher.
It’s not the first time the hair care brand has faced legal action. In 2023, dozens of women sued Olaplex, blaming the products for their hair loss, breakage and scalp injuries, McClatchy News reported.
Here’s what to know about the latest settlement:
Who’s eligible?
Anyone in the U.S. who bought one or more Olaplex products with “Made in USA” labeling between Feb. 7, 2019, and Sept. 6, 2024, is eligible to file a claim, according to the claims administrator.
How do I file a claim?
Eligible Olaplex buyers can submit a claim form online or by mail, settlement administrators said. All claims must be postmarked or submitted by May 12.
How much is the payment?
Buyers who submit a valid claim will receive a $5 voucher to use toward any product on the Olaplex website, administrators said. The coupon can be combined with other offers on the brand’s site, but cannot be stacked with other coupon codes.
Additionally, claims are limited to one per person regardless of how many eligible Olaplex products were purchased, according to the administrator’s website.
Vouchers will expire after 12 months.
When will I get paid?
Vouchers will be disbursed within 60 days of the final settlement date, which is expected to be “on or around” Sept. 12, according to the claims administrator.
