Driver runs red light and crashes into golf cart, killing woman, Florida cops say
A woman driving a golf cart was killed in a senior living community when a van driver ran a red light and crashed into her, Florida Highway Patrol said.
The 71-year-old Sun City Center resident died of her injuries following the crash at around 8 a.m. on Wednesday, April 2, according to state troopers.
A 31-year-old Tampa man was driving a Ram ProMaster van on Sun City Center Boulevard in the 55+ community as the woman was crossing the six-lane road in her Yamaha golf cart with a green light, highway patrol said.
The man didn’t stop at the red light on the 45 mph road and caused the fatal T-bone crash, according to troopers.
The golf cart driver died at a hospital, while the man was uninjured, highway patrol said.
The woman was crossing State Road 674 at Pebble Beach Boulevard, which is a legal intersection for golf carts to cross the busy road, Sun City Center says. The community advertises itself as “one of the very few in Florida that allows golf carts to be driven on the roadways.”
Sun City Center is mostly situated between Interstate 75 and U.S. Route 301 in the Tampa Bay area.
