Bicyclist killed when he’s hit by 4 vehicles as 1 driver flees, MO cops say
A bicyclist collided with a vehicle on the road, then fell into a lane and was fatally hit by three more vehicles, Missouri police said.
The man was biking against traffic when he was hit, police said. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
The driver of the vehicle accused of initially hitting the 27-year-old bicyclist fled the scene of the accident, prompting a days-long search, according to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.
Tamarris Buckner, 29, is now charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death after “community tips and information” led to her identification days after the April 1 crash.
Her attorney information was not listed.
In addition to information gathered from the community, a tracker in Buckner’s car placed her at the scene of the accident even when she denied being there, according to the probable cause statement filed on April 6. The woman’s vehicle also had “heavy front-end damage,” police said.
Buckner told police that she had been drinking and had ingested marijuana the day of the accident, the probable cause statement said.
The biker was identified as 27-year-old Jason Lewis of St. Peters, police said in an April 6 news release.
“In addition to his many admirable qualities, Jason was dedicated to his family,” his obituary said. “His kindness shone through in the way he supported and helped those closest to him.”
Buckner is being held without bond and was scheduled to appear in court the afternoon of April 7, according to court records.
St. Peters is about a 30-mile drive northwest from St. Louis.
