SUV slams into pizza shop as sixth graders eat on field trip, Texas cops say
A group of sixth-graders were injured when an SUV drove into a Cici’s Pizza in eastern Texas during their field trip, authorities said.
Police told KLTV that between 30 and 50 students were at the pizza place when the crash occurred, with some inside and some outside the building.
Mount Pleasant Police Department received a call about a vehicle hitting the building at 11:20 a.m. April 10, according to a news release.
Brandie Rushing, who works at a store near the restaurant, told KTAL the impact “sounded like a bomb went off.”
“(I) came out, there were a couple of girls who were complaining of back pain and head hurting,” she said. “We got them on the ground. Got them stable, kept them talking.”
A total of 10 people, six kids and four adults, were injured when the SUV hit the restaurant, according to a police news release shared on Facebook. Six had only minor injuries, three had more severe injuries and the tenth is in critical condition. The 79-year-old driver of the SUV was uninjured.
Police said the cause of the crash is under investigation.
The students attend Chapel Hill Independent School District. The district said it is offering counseling services to students and staff who need support.
Mount Pleasant is a 120-mile drive east of Dallas, about 60 miles west from the border of Arkansas.
