Shelter dog with ‘rare’ preference is ready to be your ‘co-pilot.’ Meet Duke

It’s not often a wild concept to hear that either a dog or cat often choose to bond faster with women over men, but a particular shelter pup in Wisconsin is looking to change the game.

At least a little.

“What can we say about Duke? Duke is a dude’s dog,” the Oshkosh Area Humane Society said in an April 23 Facebook post. “He’s one of those rare dogs that actually seems to bond faster with men than with women.”

Data showed a dog’s brain “is more responsive to dog-directed speech spoken by women,” according to a 2023 story by Psychology Today, which could make Duke a little bit of an oddity.

At 2 years old, the mixed-breed believes he’s a lap dog, despite his size, his pet profile reveals, and is very comfortable around men.

“He loves riding in vehicles too. His foster home said his ideal home might actually be a truck- or maybe a semi? They said they can picture him riding in a big rig with a truck driver. Know anyone looking for a co-pilot?” the shelter asked.

Duke’s likes include:

  • Treats!

  • Snuggles

  • Patience

His profile suggests Duke would do best in a home where there are no other dogs or cats (since he has a tendency to chase them, the shelter notes) and would do well in a house with older kids.

For more information, visit the shelter’s website.

Oshkosh is about a 90-mile drive northwest from Milwaukee.
