An off-road motorcyclist exploring a mountain pass plunged 100 feet down a hillside, California rescuers said.

San Bernardino County Fire Protection District crews responded to a report of a motorcycle accident a mile off Cleghorn Trail in Cajon Pass the afternoon of Saturday, April 26, fire officials said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Rescuers said they initially requested a helicopter to hoist the motorcyclist from the area; however, the request was canceled because of “nearby power lines and high winds.”

Given the “challenging terrain and distance from the roadway,” rescuers said they called in help from their search and rescue team.

Fire crews created “a rope rescue system” to raise the rider back to the road, the district said.

A video shared by rescuers shows crews hooking equipment to a truck before slowly carrying it down the hillside. Then, rescuers prep the motorcyclist in a litter and carry them up the hillside as crews from higher ground above help reel the equipment up.

The motorcyclist, who was left with moderate injuries from the 100-foot fall, was taken to a nearby trauma center by ambulance, rescuers said.

Cajon Pass, between the San Bernardino Mountains and San Gabriel Mountains, is about a 65-mile drive northeast from Los Angeles.
