A college student was killed at a party when gunfire rained down from the floor above, fatally hitting him, Michigan officials told news outlets.

It happened at about 11 p.m. Friday, May 9, at a home in Tallmadge Township, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office told WXMI.

Deputies say a man in an upstairs bedroom found a gun inside the home and shot into the floor several times, sending bullets through the ceiling and toward the partygoers, the outlet reported. One bullet struck 19-year-old Connor Lotterman in the head, according to deputies, and he was taken to a hospital where he died.

Investigators say everyone at the party knew one another, WOOD reported.

An autopsy was conducted and the death was determined to be accidental, the station reported, adding that deputies believe alcohol played a role.

Lotterman, who was an engineering student at Grand Valley State University, was also the youngest of five siblings, his obituary read.

An investigation is still underway and the county prosecutor’s office is determining what charges, if any, to bring against the man who fired the gun, the Holland Sentinel reported.
