Six months into his second term, President Donald Trump retains broad approval from his Republican base — but there has been some slippage, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.

It comes after a busy stretch for the president, who has cracked down on illegal immigration, imposed tariffs across the globe, bombed Iranian nuclear sites and pushed through a sweeping tax-and-spending bill, dubbed the “Big, Beautiful Bill.” More recently, he’s been dogged by controversy over his administration’s handling of an investigation into Jeffrey Epstein.

Conducted Aug. 4 to 10, the survey sampled 3,554 U.S. adults and has a margin of error of 1.8 percentage points.

In the poll, a strong majority of Trump 2024 voters, 85%, said they approved of his job performance. While this figure is high, it is down slightly from 88% in June and 95% in February.

It also mirrors the decline in approval from Americans overall — 47% in February to 38% today. Sixty percent disapproved.

Among self-identified strong Republicans, support for Trump’s job performance remains nearly unanimous: 93% approve today, down only slightly from 96% at the start of his presidency.

However, his approval has declined more noticeably among Republicans who do not identify as strong partisans and among GOP-leaning independents.

Currently, about six in ten in each group approve of Trump’s performance, compared with around three-quarters when he returned to the White House.

Trump has also lost some support when it comes to a handful of specific issues.

Currently, 55% of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents believe Trump is improving how the federal government functions, while 16% feel he is making it worse, and 29% see his impact as a combination of both positive and negative.

This contrasts with the early days of his presidency when 76% of Republicans anticipated he would enhance government performance.

Republican confidence in Trump’s ability to make sound decisions about the Ukraine–Russia war has also fallen since before he took office.

Today, 73% of Republicans express confidence in his handling of the conflict — an eight-point drop from 81% last summer. It comes ahead of Trump’s planned summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

However, declining support from the president’s own party is not uncommon during the start of a new term.

For example, at the same point during his presidency, former President Joe Biden’s approval rating among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents had fallen 20 points from 86% to 66%.
