Lottery winner puzzled when cashier can’t cash ticket. Turns out, he hit jackpot
After cashing in some winning tickets, a Maryland man decided to try his luck again.
The scratch-off ticket Scott Twigg wanted to buy, though, wasn’t available at the Cumberland convenience store he visited on Sept. 7, Maryland Lottery officials said in a Sept. 10 news release.
So, Twigg bought some $5 FAST PLAY tickets instead, lottery officials said.
He cashed in some small prizes from those tickets and opted for a $10 FAST PLAY Lucky Numbers ticket, lottery officials said.
Little did Twigg know that his slight decision would bolster his luck from “OK to out of this world.”
Twigg, however, didn’t realize this right away.
When he scanned his ticket, he said the message told him to take it to the cashier.
“I did, and she said she couldn’t cash it,” he said.
Puzzled, Twigg said he asked her, “Why not?”
“Because you just won the jackpot,” he said the cashier told him.
The cashier showed Twigg that one of the numbers on his ticket matched the winning icon for the game’s progressive jackpot of $140,569, lottery officials said.
Twigg, a restaurant manager, said he already has plans for his winnings.
“I’m going to buy a house, get a car and put anything left in savings,” he said.
Twigg told lottery officials he still plans to put in a lot of hours at work, “but the windfall will allow him to breathe a little easier.”
Cumberland is in northwest Maryland.
