Sea creature duo spotted in ‘once in a lifetime’ sighting, California photos show
A pair of sea creatures was spotted off the coast of California, and boaters are calling it an “incredible sighting,” a whale-watching company said.
Two sperm whales were spotted around 5.5 miles off the coast of Oceanside in a “rare” event, according to a Sept. 14 news release by Oceanside Adventures.
The “once in a lifetime experience” that marks the company’s first sighting in 10 years was captured on film by the boat’s drone operator.
The two sperm whales, one named Kiwi and one named Guava, have been seen together at least four times since 2023 in other locations, the company said.
Sperm whales are rare in the area because they prefer deeper waters as they dive to get their food, which is mostly squid, the company said.
They can stay submerged for two hours, “making them hard to find,” the post said.
Instagram users rushed to the comments to share their thoughts on the “beautiful” experience with one person saying, “magical for sure!”
“So amazing!” another person wrote.
Oceanside is about an 80-mile drive southeast from downtown Los Angeles.
