Daughter can’t leave work to buy lottery ticket, so she sends mom. They won big
A Maryland woman couldn’t break away from work but still wanted to be sure she had a Powerball ticket.
So the woman sent her mother to buy a ticket for the Sept. 10 drawing, Maryland Lottery officials said in a Sept. 22 news release.
It’s a good thing she did, as it led to a big prize.
The mother-daughter duo watched the game closely as the jackpot recently climbed to “$1.787 billion before being split by tickets sold in Missouri and Texas in the Sept. 6 drawing,” lottery officials said.
But even after the jackpot had been won, the two continued to try their luck.
The mother bought her daughter a Powerball ticket at a Belcamp convenience store, lottery officials said.
The daughter, though, waited to check her ticket and asked her mother to check it for her, lottery officials said.
The ticket scored them a $50,000 prize by matching the Powerball and four of the white balls, according to lottery officials.
“We were so excited,” the daughter told lottery officials.
While this is the daughter’s first memorable win, her mother said she’s scored prizes from $50 to $100 in the past.
“It’s just fun money,” the mother told lottery officials.
The daughter told lottery officials she’s unsure how she will spend her winnings but that she’s already had a celebratory dinner at a restaurant with her mother and a sibling.
Belcamp is about a 25-mile drive northeast from Baltimore.
What to know about Powerball
To score the jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball.
The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1 in 292,201,338.
Tickets can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times and price vary by state.
Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online.
Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
