A woman was shot dead by her husband one day before her birthday and the grand opening of her business, according to Georgia police and local reports.

Officers were called to a Douglasville home Oct. 4 for a “domestic incident” and found the victim “lying in the yard with unknown injuries and a man standing nearby,” according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The man, identified by investigators as 51-year-old Volanta Lejuan Walker, was armed with a gun and refused officers’ commands to drop his weapon, police said.

When he pointed the gun at officers, one of them shot and injured him, according to an Oct. 5 news release.

Walker’s wife, Sabrina Walker, was pronounced dead at the scene, investigators said. While police identified the victim as Sabrina Walker, some family members referred to her as Sabrina Willis.

An investigation revealed the couple was in a fight when Volanta Walker chased his wife outside before shooting and killing her, police said.

The couple had been married for less than a year, and Oct. 5 would have been the slain wife’s 57th birthday, family members told WAGA.

It was also the date she planned for the grand opening of her salon business, the Groomsmen of Atlanta Barbershop, family members told Atlanta News First. Even after her death, her daughters executed their mom’s plans to open the business.

“This really helps keep us going today because this was a really tough, tough day for us. This is what my mom would’ve wanted,” Shabrecka Polk told the outlet.

Anesha Nixon, another of the victim’s daughters, told WAGA it was important they opened the business because their mom had “put her blood, sweat, and tears” into it.

Sabrina Walker was a mother of three and also had one grandson, her aunt said in a Facebook post.

“She will be missed. When I tell you she was silly and fun to be around. Not ever a dull moment with her or the girls,” Tajuana Tee said on Facebook.

Douglasville is about a 20-mile drive west from Atlanta.
