Siblings running fake dentist office drill veneers into woman’s gums, FL cops say
A brother and sister are charged with running a fake dentist office in Orlando, Florida, where investigators say one woman received veneers that were too big and drilled into her gums, leading to a “severe infection.”
After Carlos Arturo Bedoya Rendon placed the porcelain veneers into her mouth on June 27, 2024, the woman “noticed they were too large and did not look right,” court documents say.
She later had the veneers removed by a different dentist and needed four root canals due to the “damage,” as well as a separate procedure to repair her natural teeth, which were significantly shaved down by Carlos Rendon.
Carlos Rendon and his sister, Yorlady Rendon, are suspected of running an unlicensed dental practice on Village Park Drive in Orlando since at least 2020, according to investigators.
The Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation, which investigated the siblings, confirmed to McClatchy News on Oct. 9 that they were arrested.
They are facing charges of practicing dentistry without a license and operating a non-licensed dental laboratory, court records show.
Their dental business, 4D Design Your Smile, according to investigators, did not return McClatchy News’ request for comment Oct. 9.
The business was previously called Digital Cosmetology Design Your Smile, court documents say.
The investigation
According to investigators, Yorlady Rendon would help her brother during illegal dental procedures. She was also in charge of scheduling appointments and finances, court documents say.
The MBI started investigating the siblings’ dental practice following a tip from a Florida Department of Health investigator in April 2022, according to court documents.
The investigator said a licensed dentist reported one of their patients paid Carlos Rendon about $4,000 for veneer work, and that he does not have a dental license, court documents say.
The Florida Department of Health told WOFL, which first reported the story, that Carlos Rendon has a license to practice cosmetology, not dentistry.
Court documents mention at least three victims, including the woman who developed an infection after Carlos Rendon gave her veneers. The victims are family members.
The woman initially contacted Carlos Rendon for two missing back molars, according to her sworn statement.
He recommended porcelain veneers for all of her teeth and quoted her $7,000 for the procedure, investigators say. She then agreed to get a full set of veneers.
The day of the procedure, Yorlady Rendon fit the veneers over the woman’s teeth, then Carlos Rendon glued them in place, according to investigators.
The woman first told Yorlady Rendon that the veneers looked large, but Yorlady Rendon told her “not to worry,” court documents say. When the procedure was over, the woman “wanted to cry because of how they looked.”
The next day, her tooth became fractured without her eating and she found herself struggling to talk, according to investigators.
After the procedure, she visited Carlos Rendon and complained the veneers were “pushing into her gums causing them to be swollen.”
She also “stated the one set of molars had a hole in it and all the food would go in through that hole and get trapped between the veneer and gums causing an infection,” court documents say.
Carlos Rendon is accused of saying there was nothing he could do and that “she just needed to get used to them.”
Carlos Rendon also told her that removing her veneers would require a laser machine, which he did not have, according to investigators.
He then said she needed to get her veneers removed elsewhere and promised to pay her back 70% of her money if she returned the teeth, court documents say.
She ultimately went to the hospital for nerve pain caused by the veneers and later visited Colombia to have them removed at a different dental office.
The woman told investigators she first needed antibiotics for eight days due to infection, before the veneers could be removed.
She then had the veneers removed through a laser procedure and received four root canals, according to court documents.
Over time, Carlos Rendon paid the woman back in installments totaling $5,900 after she made repeated attempts to get her money, court documents say.
According to investigators, Carlos and Yorlady Rendon have advertised their dental services as recently as Sept. 16.
