World’s worst job? 300,000 used condoms were being washed for resale, Vietnam cops say
2020 just earned another feather in its cap.
A factory in Vietnam was busted last week for planning to recycle and resell more than 300,000 used condoms, officials say.
Authorities in the country’s Binh Duong province seized about 324,000 used condoms that were set to be cleaned, repackaged and resold, Vietnam Express reported.
Thousands of others were found ready for sale, already wrapped in brand-less packaging, according to the outlet.
Authorities said the woman who rented the facility wasn’t able to produce proper documentation on where the condoms originated, VN Explorer reported.
She told authorities that she receives thousands of used rubbers once a month from an “unknown source,” according to the outlet.
After receiving the condoms, she told authorities she cleans and dries the rubbers then “reshapes” them on a faux phallus before they are repackaged for sale, according to Tuoi Tre News.
Local news outlet VTV said it wasn’t clear how many of the recycled condoms had already been sold, but the woman told authorities that she receives $0.17 for every kilogram of recycled condoms she readies for sale, Reuters reported.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has warned that a condom should never be reused, even if it’s been washed.
“Incorrect use, such as reusing a condom or using more than one at a time, diminishes the protective effect of condoms by leading to condom breakage, slippage, or leakage,” Elizabeth Torrone, an epidemiologist at the CDC’s Division of STD Prevention, previously told Buzzfeed.
