At least 16 injured, assailant dead in shooting at Turkish school
ISTANBUL - At least 16 people, including pupils, were injured after a gunman opened fire inside a high school in south-eastern Turkey on Tuesday, according to authorities.
The injured - 10 students, four teachers, a police officer, and a canteen operator - were hospitalized after the assailant entered the school in Siverek district of Şanlıurfa province on Tuesday armed with a shotgun, the Turkish Interior Ministry said on platform X.
The attacker, identified as a former student of the school born in 2007, shot himself with the same weapon, according to the ministry.
The motive behind the attack was not immediately clear.
Local media, including the Demirören news agency, earlier reported that the suspect hid inside the school and refused to surrender despite police warnings.
Footage on broadcaster CNN Turk showed heavy security personnel and ambulances at the scene.
