TEL AVIV, Israel - Israel's military said on Wednesday it had launched new attacks on Hezbollah targets in several areas of southern Lebanon.

Israel had earlier called on residents of several towns in the south of the neighbouring country to evacuate.

Lebanon's state news agency NNA later reported multiple Israeli strikes in southern areas and near the coastal city of Tyre. Two vehicles were reportedly hit in air strikes on a motorway near the coastal town of Jiyeh, about 30 kilometres south of Beirut. There was no immediate information on casualties.

Local media also reported further attacks on vehicles further south in the country. The Ministry of Health in Beirut stated that one person was killed and another injured in an attack on a vehicle in the coastal city of Sidon. Israel's army did not comment on the reports when asked.

Israel's military said it had attacked more than 40 targets belonging to the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia over the past 24 hours, including weapons depots.

Hezbollah, for its part, claimed responsibility for several attacks on Israeli positions in southern Lebanon.

Despite a ceasefire formally being in place, mutual attacks occur daily, with Israel and Hezbollah accusing each other of violating the agreement. The Lebanese government is not a party to the conflict.

The current ceasefire is likely to expire in the coming days unless it is extended again.

The current ceasefire is due to expire in the coming days unless extended, with a third round of talks between Israeli and Lebanese representatives scheduled for Thursday and Friday in Washington.
