Charlotte's streetcar construction is going to make driving uptown more challenging
Gold Line streetcar construction will close a major uptown street, sending drivers on detours.
Starting July 10, more segments of West Trade Street closer to uptown will be closed for traffic.
▪ One of the most significant closures of West Trade Street will be from College Street to Tryon Street. The westbound lanes of those blocks will be closed from July 10 to Sept. 10.
▪ The westbound lanes on West Trade Street between Cedar Street up to the Norfolk Southern R/R Bridge located between Cedar and Graham streets will be closed from July 10 to Aug. 6.
▪ The westbound lanes on West Trade Street between Irwin Avenue and the I-77 connector will close from July 10 to Aug. 6.
During these closures, the eastbound lanes of West Trade Street will be open to local traffic only.
Today, westbound West Trade Street is closed from Irwin Avenue to Graham Street.
The Charlotte Area Transit System said that all businesses on West Trade Street and other impacted areas will be open.
CATS is building the second phase of the Gold Line. To the west, the line will be extended from Spectrum Center to Johnson C. Smith University. To the east, the line will be extended from Novant Health Presbyterian Medical center to Sunnyside Avenue.
The second phase is projected to cost $150 million and open in 2020.
