NC Gov. Cooper, AG Stein respond to Auditor Beth Wood’s ‘troubling incident’
State Auditor Beth Wood is expected to be in court Thursday on a hit-and-run charge stemming from a Dec. 8 incident in downtown Raleigh that left her state-owned car on top of another car with no driver.
On Monday, a spokesperson for Gov. Roy Cooper said that he has “not communicated with [Wood] about it.” A spokesperson for Attorney General Josh Stein said Stein found out about the incident “through media reports.”
Wood, Cooper and Stein are Democrats.
“This was a troubling incident and the Governor is glad that the Auditor has addressed it publicly,” said Sam Chan, Cooper’s press secretary.
“The Governor has not communicated with her about it. There’s an investigation and court proceeding going on and he believes it’s appropriate for that to proceed,” Chan said.
In a statement Monday, Wood called leaving the scene of the crash “a serious mistake.”
Stein spokesperson Nazneen Ahmed said, “Because this matter is being handled by local law enforcement and the local district attorney, our office and the attorney general have no involvement and we are unable to comment further.”
Wood’s spokesperson Lane Rosen submitted his resignation on Friday, The News & Observer reported Monday.
The North Carolina Republican Party called on Wood to resign on Monday. Neither Cooper nor Stein’s offices responded to a question from The N&O about whether they think Wood should resign.
