Welcome to your governor’s race edition of our Under the Dome newsletter. I’m Dawn Vaughan, Capitol bureau chief at The News & Observer.

The conviction on 34 felony counts in a hush money trial of former President Donald Trump didn’t change Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson’s support for Trump.

Robinson is a longtime supporter of Trump who held a fundraiser with the former president in December at Trump’s home in Florida. After a New York City jury convicted Trump on Thursday, Robinson posted on social media: “The Democrats know they can’t beat President Trump at the polls so they weaponize our government against him. The voters should decide this election and I believe we will reject this sham trial by putting President Donald Trump back in office this November.”

Trump officially endorsed Robinson at a Greensboro rally a few days before Robinson won the Republican primary for governor in March. Trump and Robinson held a fundraiser together in December at Trump’s home in Florida.

Trump’s sentencing is in July, before the Republican National Convention.
