NC governor’s race: In homestretch, Stein far out-raises Robinson and campaigns with Harris
Welcome to the governor’s race edition of our Under the Dome politics newsletter. I’m Dawn Vaughan, The News & Observer’s Capitol bureau chief. It’s the homestretch. Election Day is Tuesday.
In the final days of campaign season, the presidential candidates have been in North Carolina nearly every day. For the governor’s race, Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein and Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson have been holding campaign events daily.
The two campaigns have taken very different roads this fall after the September shakeup in Robinson’s campaign due to the damaging CNN report, which Robinson denies. Half of his lieutenant governor staff quit and most of his campaign staff did, too. Robinson has since been holding campaign events by himself, aside from one town hall with the GOP candidate for lieutenant governor, Hal Weatherman. Stein held a campaign rally with Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus this past week, and also gave a speech on stage at Vice President Kamala Harris’ rally in Raleigh on Wednesday.
“Government is not complicated. Put the people first and then fight for them,” Stein told rally-goers.
He also talked about “building a better future” and choosing “hope over hate,” criticizing both Donald Trump and Robinson.
Stein out-raises Robinson by 11 times
The latest campaign finance reports were posted on Thursday, showing Stein raising a massive 11 times more money this quarter than Robinson. The time frame is July through October.
Here’s a breakdown of their fundraising and spending.
Stein campaign money:
▪ $44.6 million in donations
▪ $59.3 million in total expenditures, with $43.3 million on operating expenses and $11.7 million to candidates and political action committees
▪ $15.9 million cash on hand at the beginning, and $1.2 million cash on hand at the end of the third quarter
Robinson campaign money:
▪ $4.0 million in donations
▪ $6.5 million cash on hand at the beginning, and $680,641 cash on hand at the end.
▪ $9.9 million in total expenditures, $9.8 million of it on operating expenses and zero to candidates and PACs
