Charlotte City Council approves raise for City Manager Marcus Jones. How much he’ll make
Charlotte City Manager Marcus Jones is getting a pay raise of 5%, Mayor Vi Lyles announced at Monday’s City Council meeting.
The raise will bring his base salary to about $474,530.
For the second year in a row, the City Council did not vote in open session on the raise, a potential violation of North Carolina open meeting laws.
Council members also didn’t vote in open session last year on raises for the city clerk and city attorney. A pair of attorneys told The Charlotte Observer at the time that was a likely violation of North Carolina open meeting laws.
City spokesman Jason Schneider said Monday the City Council approved the raise in a recent closed session and that the city clerk’s office could potentially provide the vote tally.
In contrast, the Mecklenburg County Commission voted in open session in September on a raise for County Manager Dena Diorio. Commissioners also got a summation of Diorio’s latest performance review during that public meeting.
Asked about the legality of not voting in open session on raises, Lyles said she follows the guidance of the city attorney’s office.
Lyles also announced Monday the council approved a 2% raise for the city clerk. The raises are effective retroactive to July 1, she said.
