Tariq Bokhari officially resigns from Charlotte City Council. Here’s his last day

Charlotte City Council member Tariq Bokhari’s last day in local government will be Sunday.

Mayor Vi Lyles announced at Monday’s council meeting she officially accepted his letter of resignation.

Bokhari, a four-term Republican representing south Charlotte’s District 6, previously confirmed his plan to resign for a job in the Trump administration. He’ll serve as deputy administrator for the Federal Transit Administration.

He told his fellow council members the day was “bittersweet.”

“It has been the honor of a lifetime,” he said. “I will continue to do everything I can do support Charlotte ... and to support you all and everything you’re working on.”

Remaining City Council members will hold an open application process to find a replacement to finish out Bokhari’s term. The replacement must be a Republican who lives in the district.

One name floated frequently since Bokhari confirmed his plans: his wife, former state House candidate Krista Bokhari. But not all are necessarily on-board, with Council member Malcolm Graham previously telling Observer news partner WSOC-TV he prefers not to appoint family members of a departing representative.
