Breaking down potential overrides on DEI and other vetoes | Under the Dome podcast
When the North Carolina General Assembly returns to Raleigh this summer, there are several vetoes from Democratic Gov. Josh Stein awaiting action from the Republican-controlled legislature.
Good morning and welcome to your Under the Dome newsletter, which on Tuesdays is a preview of our latest podcast that posted this morning. I’m Dawn Vaughan, Capitol bureau chief and host of the Under the Dome podcast. On this episode, I’m joined by politics reporter Avi Bajpai and higher education reporter Korie Dean.
While the legislature has been away so far in July, Stein has signed and vetoed several bills, including three that ban diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in K-12, higher education and state government. Stein vetoed bills in June about immigration and getting rid of the concealed carry gun permit law. They also await override votes.
Dean explains the difference between the latest anti-DEI bill for universities and action already taken by the UNC System. We also discuss how swing votes will be in play in order for Republicans to successfully overturn a veto.
Plus, with President Donald Trump signing Congress’ big spending bill into law, we look at the impact of federal cuts on higher education.
After the break, we also talk about how college accreditation politics brings Florida and North Carolina together. Plus, stay tuned to the end for our picks for Headliner of the Week.
