Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles’ nearly decade-long tenure as the city’s top elected official is coming to an end.

The five-term Democrat announced Thursday she plans to resign from office June 30 and won’t run for mayor in 2027. First elected in 2017, Lyles came into office with a long history with the city. She made history as the city’s first Black woman mayor and has led Charlotte through landmark decisions, a pandemic and controversies.
