Charlotte council member John Autry to run for NC House

Democrat John Autry, just re-elected to the Charlotte City Council, plans to run for the N.C. House seat being vacated by Democratic Rep. Tricia Cotham.

Autry plans to file Thursday afternoon.

“As soon as I heard Tricia wasn’t running, I started calling around in the district to gauge what kind of support I would have,” he said. “And the level of support was very humbling.”

Democrat Billy Maddalon, who ran for an at-large council seat this year, also is running. Autry has supported Maddalon’s earlier campaigns.

“I’m not running against Billy,” he said. “I’m trying to be elected to the N.C. House so I can have a positive impact on the state and hopefully provide some insight as someone who’s served in municipal government.”

District 100, which stretches through east Charlotte from Plaza Midwood to Matthews, overlaps with much of Autry’s City Council district.
