Piper Glen residents are planning a rally Friday afternoon on Rea Road to protest a plan to place four cellphone towers inside their neighborhood.

Crown Castle, which builds cellphone infrastructure, plans to install cellphone towers that are roughly 30 feet high inside the neighborhood. The work is being done for Verizon.

“They are in front of people’s lawns,” said Ali Martinez, who is helping lead the protest.

Piper Glen residents have asked the city for help, but the city has said there isn’t much it can do. The city must approve permits for the towers, but the Federal Communications Commission has the ultimate control over the towers.

Residents have a meeting scheduled May 19 with representatives from Crown Castle and Verizon from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at 9009 Bryant Farms Road.
