Former Transportation Secretary Foxx supporting Joe Biden ‘until the last dog dies’
Despite polls that show his candidate faltering, former U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said Wednesday he’s sticking with former Vice President Joe Biden.
“We have to run this race as hard as possible until the last dog dies,” Foxx, Charlotte’s former mayor, told The Observer in an interview.
A new Washington Post-ABC News Poll released Wednesday showed Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has surged to the top of the Democratic contest nationally while Biden has slipped to second. Rising has been former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who so far has spent over $300 million.
Biden’s lead in South Carolina also has shrunk, according to Real Clear Politics’ polling average. That state votes Feb. 29.
Foxx, who served with Biden in the Obama administration, would not comment on the rise of Sanders and Bloomberg. He said he’s confident the former vice president, who had poor showings in Iowa and New Hampshire, will do well in more diverse states.
“One of the things that I as an African American feel strongly about is the partnership between Barack Obama and Joe Biden,” he said. “Joe is the only person who has worked so publicly in support of an African American.”
Foxx conceded that Sanders is “having a moment.” But, he added, “the most important thing we’ve got to figure out is who is most capable of walking in on Day 1.”
