Fact-checking NC’s Tillis and Cunningham at the final U.S. Senate debate
The News & Observer is fact-checking the third and final debate between incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis and Democratic opponent Cal Cunningham. Here are some of the claims made by the two candidates for U.S. Senate on Thursday night.
SUPREME COURT
CLAIM: “Within 48 hours of Justice Ginsburg’s death Cal Cunningham had $6 million channeled to his campaign from some of the most radical left organizations who expect him to use the rubber stamp to confirm activist judges,” Tillis said.
The dollar amount of this statement is true. In the days after Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death, Cunningham was one of many Democratic candidates who received contributions in a single fundraising effort, according to the Associated Press. The AP reported Cunningham received $6 million by Monday. Justice Ginsburg died on a Friday evening.
HEALTH CARE
CLAIM: Some 1.3 million North Carolinians don’t have health care, Cunningham said during the debate.
As of July, one in five North Carolinians — roughly 1.2 million — under the age of 65 don’t have health care, according to a study released earlier this summer.
