Dates and deadlines to know ahead of the Charlotte’s 2022 midterm elections

The 2022 midterm elections in North Carolina are just around the corner, meaning it’s time to make sure you’re registered to vote and make a plan to get your vote counted on or before Election Day.

This election cycle, there will be 67 seats on the ballot in Mecklenburg County. Races will determine who represents you on state courts, on school boards, in the U.S. Senate, in the state legislature and more.

Here are the dates and deadlines you need to know ahead of the 2022 elections in Mecklenburg County in order to make sure your voice is heard:

Voter registration deadlines

In order to vote in the November general elections, you must register to vote by 5 p.m. on Oct. 14.

You must be 18 years old to vote, but you can “pre-register” up to two years before your 18th birthday. You can also vote in primary elections at 17 if you will turn 18 before the general election.

Voters in Mecklenburg County must also be U.S. citizens and residents of the county for at least 30 days.

2022 primary elections

The date of North Carolina’s 2022 primary elections has been caught up in legal battles but is now set for May 17.

Citing recent court decisions, the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections says more details on primary election day are “coming soon.”

Election Day 2022

Election Day 2022 is set for Nov. 8, and polls in Mecklenburg County will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Vote-by-mail dates and deadlines

Any registered voter in Mecklenburg County can request an absentee ballot to vote by mail, but there are dates and deadlines you need to make sure you meet in order to get your ballot and have it counted.

For the 2022 general election, the process for requesting an absentee ballot opens at 8 a.m. on Sept. 9 and closes at 5 p.m. on Nov. 1.

Absentee ballots are then due by 5 p.m. on Nov. 8.

In-person early voting dates and deadlines

Mecklenburg County voters can also cast their ballots early in-person through “One-Stop Absentee Voting.”

For the 2022 general election, early voting locations will open at 8 a.m. on Oct. 20 and close at 7 p.m. on Nov. 5.

There will also be in-person early voting for the May 17 primary elections, starting April 28 and ending May 14.

When will 2022 elections be certified?

The deadlines for Mecklenburg County elections to be certified is 11 a.m. on Nov. 18.
