How to request an absentee ballot in Mecklenburg County’s 2022 midterm elections

The 2022 midterm elections are just around the corner, and the primaries will be here even sooner. But if you’re otherwise occupied on either day, you can still make sure your voice is heard.

Registered voters who can’t make it to their polling place on Election Day have options in Charlotte for still casting their ballot, including vote-by-mail and in-person early voting. And absentee options are also in place for the primaries.

But there are steps you need to take ahead of time to participate and deadlines to be aware of.

Here’s what to know about absentee voting in Mecklenburg County:

How to request an absentee ballot in Mecklenburg County

Any registered Mecklenburg County voter is eligible to request an absentee ballot, according to the county Board of Elections, and requests can be filed anytime “prior to the last Tuesday before an election.”

You can request your absentee ballot online at votebymail.ncsbe.gov or complete an absentee ballot request form, found on the Board of Elections’ website, and mail or deliver it to the Board of Elections office.

If you’re in the military, the immediate family of someone in the military, or a U.S. citizen living abroad, you need to use the Federal Voting Assistance Program to get your absentee ballot via fvap.gov.

How to vote absentee in-person in Mecklenburg County

All registered Mecklenburg County voters are also eligible to vote absentee in-person, also known as early voting.

Early voting begins the third Thursday before an election and ends the Saturday before an election.

“Dates, times, and locations vary by election,” the county Board of Elections says, and are posted ahead of elections on the county website voter page.
