Want to vote on Election Day in North Carolina? Here’s how to register
Election season is here in North Carolina, which means those who want to cast their ballots must be registered to vote.
The deadline to register to vote in the upcoming statewide primary was April 22; however, voters will be allowed to register between the first and second primaries this year, per state law.
Here are the requirements to register, how to complete a voter registration application and how to check its status.
How to determine voter eligibility
According to N.C. State Board of Elections, you are eligible to register to vote if:
You are a U.S. citizen.
Live in the county where you are registering, and have lived there for at least 30 days before the election.
Are at least 18 years old.
Are not serving a sentence for a felony conviction.
How to register to vote
If you’re eligible to vote, the state offers three ways to register, according to NCSBE:
Online or in-person at the DMV: You can visit any DMV in the state and complete a voter registration application. Voters can also submit an application online. There is no fee to apply. If there are any issues with your application, your county board of elections will contact you.
By mail: Voter registration applications are available on the NCSBE website in English and Spanish. To submit the application, you need to print the form and complete all required fields before mailing it to a county board of elections office.
In-person during early voting: You can register to vote at any one-stop early voting site in your county. There, you must complete a voter registration application and show some form of identification such as a driver’s license, government-issued photo ID, bank statement or student ID.
How can I check my voter registration status?
You can check your voter registration status by entering your first and last name into the voter search tool on the NCSBE website. To narrow your search results, add a birth date or county of residence.
Other information that can be found with the voter search tool includes:
Your local polling place.
Sample ballots for upcoming elections.
Voting districts.
Past elections you participated in.
