School board member, newcomer unseat incumbent in Union County 2022 commissioners race

In a crowded field of 10 Republicans vying for three seats on Union County’s board of commissioners, an incumbent and a school board member were victorious.

Stony Rushing, who finished first in voting and has been a board member since 2014, won 21% of the vote. Newcomer Brian W. Helms was second, with 17% of the vote.

Melissa Merrell, who currently serves as the chairperson for the Union County Schools Board of Education, came in third, receiving 17% of the vote.

Dennis Rape, who was elected to the board in 2018 and currently serves as Chairman, received 13% of the vote.
