Elections

When will voters in Charlotte and across North Carolina know the election results?

Election results in North Carolina are expected to take longer than usual — possibly not unveiled until early Wednesday morning.

After election polls close at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, unofficial results will begin to be reported on the State Board of Elections’ results dashboard.

But because of a new state law, in-person early voting ballots can’t be tabulated until polls close. The process could take up to take up to 60 minutes.

In the past, poll workers could have early votes ready to report at 7:30 p.m.

Absentee ballots can still be tabulated before polls close and will likely be the first to be reported.

Precinct poll workers will hand-deliver results from Election Day ballots to county board of elections offices between 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Those results will be reported starting at about 8:30 p.m. and will continue until all are posted, which could take until around 1 a.m.
