If you’re a member of the minority party, how will you be an effective legislator as a member of the minority party?

I plan to serve in the majority party, which Mecklenburg County needs. Having previously served in the NC House, I know that not all legislation moves forward based on party affiliation. But being an effective legislator is often not related to votes or legislation. An effective legislator can serve constituents in a variety of ways through responsive, attentive service.

School test scores dropped during the COVID-19 pandemic. What should North Carolina do to improve student performance?

Test scores dropped due to remote learning and the lack of direct engagement with students. We need to get students in the classroom, especially in schools with extremely high rates of chronic absenteeism. To reverse the learning loss we must prioritize remedial instruction.

What do you want to happen in North Carolina if Roe v. Wade is overturned?

There are many unknowns with any potential actions of the US Supreme Court, but I do believe the unborn need protection and a voice.

What should North Carolina do to reduce violent crime?

Those who break the law must be held accountable. District Attorneys must prosecute crimes and judges must follow the law in court. And, we must, support our law enforcement community who put their lives on the line to protect us. I will always stand behind our police officers. I am proud to have the endorsement of North Carolina’s largest law enforcement association.

Should medical marijuana be legalized in North Carolina?

Only in certain circumstances and with significant limitations.

What should the state’s minimum wage be? What policies would you support to help struggling North Carolinians?

Very few businesses can hire employees for the current minimum wage. Therefore, the market sets what the minimum wage is and not an arbitrary amount set by government.

Should North Carolina expand Medicaid, and how?

Expansion of Medicaid could bring fiscal uncertainty to the state budget, as it has done in other states. Also, if Medicaid expands it will reduce the number of people on private insurance plans. Many rural hospitals, which have a large portion of its patients on Medicaid, which typically has lower reimbursement rates, will be adversely impacted. These hospitals already face financial struggles.

Is there an area where you disagree with your party? Why?

Republicans in the General Assembly do not always vote along party lines or unanimously. Therefore, there are likely to be instances where I will disagree with some members of my party.
