Have you run for elected office before? (Please list previous offices sought): No

Please list your highlights of civic involvement:

I am a mentor and volunteer at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Mecklenburg Area Catholic Schools, and Communities in Schools.

Name two personal traits that best qualify you to be a Mecklenburg County judge?

I am conscientious and disciplined.

Are the courts racially fair? If so, explain why. If not, list the specific steps you’d take to change that.

The courts are not always racially fair. Judges take an oath to be fair and impartial but some research surrounding the subject shows that implicit biases may interfere with their judgment, which adversely affects certain people. The majority of judges receive training on implicit biases but education alone does not fully address the issue. Judges should continue implicit bias training and also make conscious efforts to unlearn past misinformation and strive for more objective and fair rulings.

Why should the public, the government or the accused trust that you’ll be a competent judge?

I have served the public for the past 20 years as a legal aid attorney, a Federal Public Defender, and litigation attorney. I have a comprehensive understanding of the law. I understand how to apply the law fairly and I have treated clients, opposing counsel, the Court, and the public with respect and dignity. I plan on continuing my public service as a District Court Judge.

Is there an area where you disagree with your party? Why?

Within a party there are varied positions that members take on issues. Prior to taking a position on a matter, I strive to understand the issue from various angles and make decisions based on research, facts, and life experiences.

What separates you from your primary opponent(s)?

I have been appearing in the courts on a weekly basis for the past 20 years. I bring significant litigation and courtroom experience. I am also a permanent member of the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference.

What one professional or political accomplishment are you most proud of?

In February, my colleagues in the Mecklenburg County Bar voted for me as their top choice to fill the vacancy for Mecklenburg County District Court Seat 18, the seat that I am presently running for in this primary. In March, I also filed my notice of candidacy for this seat. I am humbled and honored to be running for District Court Judge and I am most proud of this accomplishment.
