What do you think the root causes of inflation in 2022 are and what further steps can Congress take?
One of the causes of inflation is corporate greed. We have set up an economic system in which CEOs can make 300x what entry-level workers do. This system of maximizing profits at the top has led to unprecedented price gouging during the pandemic. We need to stem the tide of corporate greed by raising the minimum wage and rebuilding our economic system to provide a fairer distribution of wealth.
Would you support either a national abortion ban or codifying Roe v. Wade? Why?
The right to privacy has been a protected right for the last 57 years since the decision regarding contraception in Griswold v. Connecticut. As people, as Americans, we have the right to make private, personal decisions for ourselves without the interference of any government, state or federal. The government should have no power to regulate life-saving medical procedures. Allowing the government to trample on the right to privacy in this way would set horrifying precedent.
Should the U.S. intervene militarily if Taiwan is invaded by China? Why or why not?
Though I believe that this question is one that would best be answered by the president, I will say that we have commitments to Taiwan set out in the Taiwan Relations Act that include military defense of the people of Taiwan. The Taiwanese people have determined for themselves that they do not want to be part of the People’s Republic of China, and we are obligated by the TRA to uphold that democratic decision.
What do you see as the biggest threat to American stability?
a) Income inequality. Since the Reagan Administration, trickle-down economics has dominated the tax code. What have we gotten from this? The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. We need to return to a fairer tax system in which the wealthy, who owe their wealth to the labor of average Americans, pay more. b) Election misinformation. Prominent figures in the US are spreading lies about our elections in order to destabilize American democracy in their favor.
Tell us your biggest, boldest idea for a bill you’d introduce in Congress if elected/reelected.
I think Democrats should join with Republican efforts to expand vocational training opportunities in public schools. College is not for everybody, and we should stop forcing it upon public school students. We should overhaul the education system in the United States to provide for a dual-track system, in which students can choose to either prepare themselves for a trade or for college. I will spearhead this effort in Congress.
