Video showing a man killing a turtle landed him in jail after people from around the world offered tips, North Carolina police say.
People from “as far away as South Africa” told police what they saw, the department posted Monday on its Facebook page.
Though the video was deleted, someone “had the forethought to record the video and send it our way,” police say.
The efforts helped the department identify Devin Antonie Simpson, 20, as the person in the video, according to the police Facebook post.
Simpson was taken into custody, police say, and smiled in his mugshot.
But the situation was “no laughing matter,” as he faces “felony animal cruelty charges,” officials say.
“It’s just senseless when you see something like that and how somebody could treat an animal that way,” spokeswoman Kristen Hunter of the Greenville Police Department said, according to The Daily Reflector.
Simpson posted a $2,500 bond, the newspaper reports.
