After calling out an “attempt to tarnish” President Donald Trump, evangelist Franklin Graham promoted prayer — and T-shirt sales.
Graham, the leader of the nonprofit Samaritan’s Purse, tweeted on Friday that the Bible urges people to pray for their leaders.
And he said one reminder of that support comes in the form of T-shirts adorned with the phrase “Pray for 45,” a reference to Trump’s place in history as the 45th president of the United States.
The shirts are being sold online for $15.99 through a webpage that bears the name of his late father, Billy Graham.
The website says its proceeds “help support world wide evangelism through the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association,” which is based in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Franklin Graham, a longtime supporter of the president, led a prayer at his inauguration.
His push for T-shirt sales came one day after he said there was “a new low” in the country’s politics.
“@SpeakerPelosi and her followers in Congress have weaponized the impeachment process,” he wrote Thursday on Twitter. “This is just another attempt to tarnish and embarrass @POTUS @realDonaldTrump before the next election.”
In his longer Facebook post, he said he prayed the president and First Lady “will sense the presence of the Lord through this unjust inquisition.”
That same day, Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives voted for aresolution authorizing the impeachment inquiry into the president, the McClatchy DC Bureau reported. It passed 232-196, with just two Democrats voting against it. Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the start of the formal inquiry in September.
Graham’s recent social media posts weren’t the first ones that expressed religious support for the president.
He previously advertised the same “Pray for 45” T-shirts in a July 2018 Facebook post that said “Prayer can make America great!”
This time around, his daughter Cissie Graham Lynch is modeling one of the T-shirts on Twitter.
The design references the Bible, with a mention of “1 Timothy 2:1-2,” according to a photo on her dad’s profile.
Those verses say: “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people — for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness,” according to the New International Version on Bible Gateway.
