41-year-old teacher charged with statutory rape of middle school student, NC cops say

A former teacher in North Carolina was arrested on charges of statutory rape involving a student, the sheriff’s office said.

Carly Smith, 41, was charged with statutory rape and statutory sex offense of a child under the age of 15, according to the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office. She also faces charges of indecent liberties with a student by a teacher and indecent liberties with a child.

Investigators acted on a tip about the former teacher at Northern Guilford Middle School and a student, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

Roughly 850 students in grades 6-8 attend Northern Guilford Middle School in Greensboro.

The age of consent in North Carolina is 16, meaning anyone younger cannot “consent to sexual intercourse under any circumstances,” according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Smith was issued a $30,000 bond. Her next court date is Jan. 16.
