What Christmas movie is the most popular in the Carolinas this year? It’s a classic
If you’re looking for movies to watch with relatives or friends this Christmas season, a new study may be helpful in finding the one everyone can agree on.
The study, done by HowToWatch, used data from Google Trends to find the most “popular,” or most searched for Christmas movies in the country and in each state.
North and South Carolina had the same favorite movie: the classic “Home Alone,” the study found.
The 1990 movie was also the most popular across the country, followed by “Die Hard” in second place and “Gremlins” in third place, the study found.
To find out which movies were the most popular, researchers found the 25 most popular holiday movies using “best of” lists, then “pared it down using ratings and popularity,” the study says.
These movies were then analyzed using Google Trends to see which titles were the most searched in the last year, the study says, and of the 25 movies, 17 of them made it as a state’s most popular movie.
There seemed to be a regional divide in which movies were the favorites.
“Home Alone” seemed to be most popular among states in the eastern half of the U.S., the study found, while “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” which was the fourth most popular overall, seemed to be favored in western states.
Meanwhile, “Gremlins” was the most popular among “southern and swampy” states, the study says.
