‘It was really crazy.’ Deer caught on camera running into North Carolina store

A loud boom ripped through a North Carolina store, and the four-legged culprit came as a surprise.

Store co-owner Wendy Sheffield said she was behind the seafood counter when she heard what sounded like an explosion on Friday.

But instead, it was a deer that had burst into Sheffield’s Seafood & Grocery in Ocean Isle Beach, she told McClatchy News in a phone interview Wednesday.

Instead of entering through the door that was propped open, the deer decided to run straight through the glass, video from the business shows.

The animal crashed into a Coca-Cola display and a potted plant, making them fly “every which way,” Sheffield said. “Other than that, she didn’t even knock a potato chip off the shelves.”

Still, the stunt cost the business $300 in repairs and earned the critter the nickname “Dasher the Door Destroyer,” according to a Facebook post from Sheffield’s daughter.

The frightened animal made its way to the back of the business, where a camera captured it go onto a boat dock. The deer jumped into the water and swam to a nearby island, according to Sheffield.

“It was really crazy, but I don’t think she (got hurt),” the co-owner said. “There wasn’t any blood. When she was running out, she was really running.”

Everyone inside the business was OK, too, she says.

Of all species, white-tailed deer are “prevalent” across the state and “are so adaptable that they are found in almost any type of habitat,” according to the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission.

The deer wasn’t the first critter that found its way into the shop.

A few birds and a bat have visited during the store’s 53 years in business, according to Sheffield.

Ocean Isle Beach is a town on the coast and roughly 40 miles north of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
