Driver falls asleep, killing 76-year-old in head-on crash, North Carolina cops say
A 76-year-old was killed after another driver fell asleep on a rural roadway, North Carolina officials say.
The woman was driving south on U.S. Highway 64 when a Dodge Caravan was heading in the other direction on Sunday afternoon, according to Trooper Jeffrey Swagger.
That’s when the man at the wheel of the minivan fell asleep and veered across the center line of the two-lane highway, hitting the woman’s car head-on, the trooper said. The van later caught fire, officials say.
The crash happened in Iredell County and roughly 3.5 miles northwest of Statesville, troopers told WBTV.
The woman, Lois Crotts of Stony Point, died at the scene, according to N.C. State Highway Patrol.
The other driver, a 25-year-old Charlotte man, was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, according to Swagger.
As of Monday afternoon, no charges had been filed in connection with the crash, which is still under investigation, officials say.
