North Carolina

January or June? Just how warm is it going to be in the Carolinas this week?

You’re not going to need your winter coats for a few days. In fact, you might need to dig out some T-shirts.

Temperatures in the Carolinas this week are expected to stay abnormally warm, forecasters say, and some areas could see rain and possibly thunderstorms early in the week.

On Saturday highs across North and South Carolina were mostly in the upper 60s to mid 70s, according to the National Weather Service.

That warm weather is expected to continue into the work week, forecasters say.

On Sunday, highs in North Carolina are mostly in the mid 60s in the western part of the state, mostly in the upper 60s in the central part of the state and mostly in the low-to-mid 70s in the eastern part of the state and on the coast, according to the NWS.

In South Carolina, highs range from the upper 60s to mid 70s statewide, the NWS says.

Similar highs are expected throughout both states through Wednesday, according to the NWS.

North Carolina should start cooling off Thursday, with highs in the upper 50s in the western part of the state and in the mid-to-upper 60s in the rest of the state, with some areas along the coast reaching the low 70s.

On Friday, highs will be mostly in the mid-to-upper 50s across the state, the NWS says.

In South Carolina temperatures are expected to stay warm on Thursday but should cool down by Friday, with highs mostly in the mid 50s to low 60s.

But with this warm weather, rain and thunderstorms are also likely in some areas.

The National Weather Service’s Greenville/Spartanburg Office, which covers western North Carolina and northwestern South Carolina, says 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain are possible Monday and Monday night along with a few thunderstorms.

In central North Carolina, 1 to 2 inches of rain are possible along with isolated thunderstorms Monday through Tuesday night, according to the National Weather Service’s Raleigh office.

Southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina could also see showers and “rogue” thunderstorms during that time period, the NWS Wilmington office says.

In eastern North Carolina, rain is possible Sunday with thunderstorms possible in the evening, the NWS Newport/Morehead office says. Showers are possible into Wednesday long with the chance of thunder.

“Scattered to numerous” showers are likely in the Columbia area Sunday afternoon and evening along with thunderstorms, the NWS says. A severe thunderstorm is possible in the midlands area.

Chances of showers and thunderstorms will continue for the area into Monday and Tuesday, the NWS says.

This comes after the Carolinas were hit with severe weather over the weekend, prompting severe thunderstorm warnings and tornado warnings in some areas.
