Delivery truck runs over homeless man sleeping underneath to escape rain, NC cops say
A homeless man died after the truck he was using as shelter ran over him, North Carolina officials say.
Michael Landon Jacobs, 38, slept underneath the delivery truck to escape rain in High Point, the city’s police department said Monday in a news release.
That day, a higher-than-normal rainfall of 0.53 inches was recorded at nearby Piedmont Triad International Airport, according to the National Weather Service.
Officers say they found Jacobs early Monday covered in blankets and laying “in a sleeping position on the parking lot” behind a Food Lion grocery store.
A witness told police a Freightliner drove over Jacobs, according to authorities.
He was left with a serious head injury and died, the High Point Police Department says.
Police say the truck driver pulled away from the store but was cooperative. Officials don’t expect to file charges in connection with the crash, according to the news release.
