This Bernese Mountain dog has a mission: Comfort grieving families at NC funeral home
A North Carolina pup is training for a very special job.
Mochi, a 2.5-month-old Bernese Mountain dog, has been working hard to offer love and comfort to those grieving the loss of loved ones at Macon Funeral Home in Franklin, according to a post on the funeral home’s website.
She’s being trained and socialized at the funeral home by her owner and the funeral home’s office administrator, Tori McKay, the website says.
McKay dreamed of having a therapy dog on staff for a decade and saw an opportunity to help the community when she and her husband got Mochi this month, she said on the website.
She said in the post that Bernese Mountain dogs usually live to be about 6 or 8 years old, and she wants those years to be meaningful for Mochi.
“I want her life to hold as much purpose as possible,” she said.
The funeral home recently introduced Mochi on its Facebook page.
She loves sleep and people, the funeral home wrote in the post, which also had a picture of Mochi snoozing on the floor.
“Stop by and meet her, she loves making new friends,” the post said.
Mochi soon will head for more training in Asheville, according to the website.
But she’s already been helping families in the time she’s been at the funeral home and has received lots of support on Facebook, the funeral home’s website says.
McKay wants to bring Mochi along on funeral visitations when families request her and wants to take her to visit nursing homes every few weeks, the website says.
“So far, everyone has been so supportive, and Mochi has already made a difference in families’ lives this week. I have had people reach out for grief therapy, and the reception on Facebook has been incredible,” McKay said in the post.
