NC woman’s vengeful ex killed her new lover with a car jack, DA says. Now comes prison
A 25-year-old man in North Carolina beat his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend to death with car jack, prosecutors said.
He could spend the next quarter of a century behind bars.
A superior court judge in Caldwell County sentenced Nathan Alexander Vasquez on Monday to between 20 and 25 years in prison for the murder of 34-year-old Marcus Devlin in 2015, the district attorney’s office said in a news release. Caldwell County is about 70 miles northwest of Charlotte.
“Investigation of the murder by the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office showed that Vasquez beat Devlin to death with a metal car jack handle when he discovered that his former girlfriend was involved in a relationship with the victim,” the release states.
Vasquez was 20 at the time, WBTV reported.
Prosecutors said Vasquez “repeatedly texted and called” his ex-girlfriend while he scoured Caldwell and Catawba counties for her location before the murder. He eventually found her at Devlin’s apartment.
Vasquez pushed his way in the front door “while swinging the jack,” according to the release.
“He hit Devlin immediately and continued to repeatedly strike the victim after he slumped to the floor,” the release states. “The autopsy report showed that the victim died as a result of blunt force trauma to multiple locations on the body.”
Vasquez pleaded guilty to second-degree murder “less than 24 hours before his case was set for trial,” prosecutors said.
He reportedly apologized to Devlin’s family in court before his sentencing.
