High school football player is killed in shooting at Cook Out, NC police say

A high school football player was killed in a shooting at a North Carolina Cook Out, media outlets report.

Jaheim Currie, a junior linebacker at Clinton High School, died from his injuries after he was shot Friday in the parking lot of a Cook Out after officials say a fight started inside the restaurant and spilled outside, WTVD reports.

Dunn police have arrested two people in connection with the shooting, WRAL reports. Christopher McNeill, 22, and a 17-year-old whose name has not been released are both charged with murder.

Now, Jaheim’s family, school and team are mourning his death.

The football team posted on Facebook Saturday asking for prayers for the family, players, coaches and community.

“Young man, I am sure you now have the best seat in the house,” the post says. “Watch over the HORSES!! We will see you again one day!!”

Kenneth McLean, Jaheim’s uncle, told WNCN his 16-year-old nephew had “always wanted to play football.

“I think that was his passion because he was the star on the team,” he told the TV station.

His teammates told WTVD that he transferred to the school over the summer and that they became “inseparable” after they met.

“He made me laugh, so I mean, he was like the life of it all,” Johny Woo, one of his friends, told WTVD.

Dunn Police are still investigating the shooting, WRAL reports, and anyone with information is asked to call 910-892-2399, 910-230-3556 or 910-893-9111.

“His memory will always be with us,” McLean told WNCN. “It’s just you know he’s going to have to be in our hearts and our minds. The only thing we have left is memories.”

Clinton is in Sampson County, about 65 miles south of Raleigh.
