Loaded gun found in North Carolina woman’s carry-on at Virginia airport, TSA says
A North Carolina woman was caught with a loaded gun at a Virginia airport, officials say.
She was going through a security checkpoint Friday at Norfolk International Airport when a gun was detected as her carry-on items went through an X-ray machine, according to the Transportation Security Administration.
The .380 caliber handgun was loaded with six bullets, TSA says.
Security officers called airport police who came to the checkpoint and confiscated the gun, TSA says.
Police detained the woman and questioned her, TSA says. She was cited for weapons charges.
Only one gun has been found at a Norfolk International Airport checkpoint this year, according to TSA. Last year, 15 were found at the airport’s checkpoints.
Nationwide, 4,432 guns were found at airport checkpoints last year, TSA says. Eighty percent were loaded.
Even people with concealed carry permits are not allowed to bring guns with them on an airplane, TSA says. Guns must be in checked bags and declared. They must be unloaded and locked in a hard case separate from ammunition.
People who bring guns to airport checkpoints can face up to $13,333 in civil penalties, TSA says.
