Severe storms could bring large hail to Charlotte area, forecasters say

Strong storms are expected to roll into the Charlotte region on Thursday — and they could bring more than thunder and lightning, according to forecasters.

Much of the Piedmont region and western North Carolina, as well as parts of Georgia and South Carolina, could get hit with “cloud to ground lightning and gusty winds” when the storms arrive this afternoon, the National Weather Service said in a weather advisory.

“If the storms develop, a few might be strong to severe, with large hail and damaging wind gusts,” forecasters said.

Mecklenburg, Union, Gaston, Cabarrus, Lincoln, Iredell and Rowan Counties are included in the forecast.

The storms should peter out by early evening, forecasters said.

Mountain counties on the Tennessee border will remain under a wind advisory from 7 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday, and more strong storms moving in from the west could develop early Friday, forecasters said.

Winds between 15 and 30 mph with some gusts of up to 50 mph could bring down power lines and trees, according to the weather service.

“Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle,” forecasters said. “Secure outdoor objects.”
